FIRS Notifies Nigerians That Your NIN and CAC Numbers Will Be Known As Tax IDs Starting in 2026 (Video)
The Federal Inland Revenue Service issued the explanation on Monday during a public awareness campaign about the new tax legislation on X.
The National Identity Management Commission’s National Identification Number (NIN) is now automatically used as each Nigerian’s Tax Identification Number (TIN), according to a Federal Inland Revenue Service announcement.
As their Corporate Affairs Commission registration number will now function as their official tax identifier under the new tax system, registered enterprises will no longer need a separate Tax ID, according to the FIRS.
The statement coincides with public outcry over the new tax laws’ clauses requiring a Tax ID for specific transactions, such as bank account ownership.
The Nigeria Tax Administration Act, which is set to go into effect in January 2026, requires the use of a Tax ID for certain transactions, according to the FIRS, which explained the policy. It emphasized that the need is not new, pointing out that it has simply been reinforced under the NTAA and has been in place since the Finance Act of 2019.
“The Tax ID unifies all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier,” the Service said.
“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used. You do not need a physical card, as the Tax ID is a unique number linked directly to your identity.”
The FIRS further stated that by guaranteeing that everyone who receives taxable income makes the required contributions, the new approach is intended to simplify identification, cut down on duplication, close tax evasion loopholes, and enhance fairness.
The Service informed Nigerians that the new tax framework is intended to improve efficiency and transparency in tax administration and encouraged the public to ignore false information surrounding the reform.
