A frightening viral video that shows an elderly man inside a casket next to a body has prompted authorities in Bekwarra Local Government Area, Cross River State, to launch a thorough investigation.
It was reported that the young people accused the man of witchcraft and kicked him into the casket lying beside the dead.
They threatened to bury him next to the dead if he did not admit to the accusation.
The unsettling event sparked widespread condemnation and public indignation.
In a statement issued by Hon. Egbung, the Acting Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Odama Egbung stated that as soon as the video started making the rounds, he got in touch with every security chief in the local government.
He claims that the violence depicted in the video spurred immediate effort to confirm the veracity of the footage and locate the perpetrators.
According to him, preliminary investigations conducted by all local government security chiefs have failed to pinpoint the specific ward, village, or community where the alleged crime was committed.
In order to identify the victim and those behind the incident, he gave the Ward Relations Officers of each political ward instructions to communicate with the chiefs, clan heads, and community youth leaders in their respective wards.
The Acting Chairman stated that the victim’s identity and the location of the video’s scene are still unknown.
He urged locals to contact the ward relations officer in their respective wards or visit the Divisional Police Headquarters, Abuochiche, with pertinent information, and asked anyone with first-hand knowledge of the alleged assault scene to speak up while investigations are ongoing.
