Mohbad’s Death: Lagos Coroner Recommends Criminal Trial for Nurse Over Negligence
In a major development surrounding the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, the Coroner’s Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos State has recommended the criminal prosecution of the nurse who treated him before his death.
Magistrate C.A. Shotobi, delivering the court’s findings on Friday, ruled that the auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, acted with gross negligence by administering injections to the late singer without a valid prescription from a licensed medical doctor.
“The nurse’s conduct was both unlawful and professionally negligent,” the magistrate stated.
While the court ruled out homicide or foul play in Mohbad’s death, it strongly criticized Ogedengbe’s actions and recommended she be charged by the Director of Public Prosecution under Section 29 of the Lagos State Coroner Law.
Thenewsnaija recalls that Mohbad passed away under controversial circumstances in September 2023, sparking outrage, protests, and widespread speculation across Nigeria.
His sudden death led to the arrest and questioning of several individuals, including fellow artist Naira Marley and music promoter Sam Larry. However, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) later cleared them of involvement.
Meanwhile, Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, is not satisfied with the DPP’s findings. On July 7, 2025, his legal team—led by human rights lawyer Wahab Shittu (SAN)—filed a notice of appeal at the Lagos Court of Appeal.
Aloba is challenging the High Court’s decision not to overturn the DPP’s advice, which absolved Naira Marley and Sam Larry. He argues that the court erred in holding that the Attorney-General’s powers under Section 211(1) of the 1999 Constitution are “unassailable” and immune from judicial review, except on political or public interest grounds.
