The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has rejected the bail application of former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello.

Justice Maryann Anenih made the ruling, citing that the application was filed prematurely.

According to the judge, the application was filed when Bello was not in custody.

This led the court to agree with the prosecution that the motion was incompetent. Consequently, the motion for bail filed by Bello was struck out.

Bello, who served as governor, faces charges related to the mismanagement of state funds, embezzlement, and abuse of office. He had earlier pleaded “not guilty” to the charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC had filed fresh charges against Bello, accusing him of fraud. The commission had initially filed charges against Bello and his co-defendants for money laundering offences.

With the rejection of his bail application, Bello will remain in EFCC custody.
