The Socialist Workers League (SWL) has demanded the immediate reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to temporarily relinquish his position as Senate President pending a full investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against him.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the organization emphasized the need for an open and transparent inquiry into the allegations, stating that Akpabio “cannot be a judge in his own case.”

The SWL also demanded the resignation of Senator Neda Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, citing his previous disbarment as a lawyer in the United States and alleged involvement in a $25 million fraud case.

The organization condemned the Senate’s handling of the allegations, stating that it trivializes a major problem for democracy and reinforces sexism and patriarchy.

The SWL called for:

  • The immediate reinstatement of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan
  • An open, transparent investigation of the allegations of sexual harassment
  • The temporary relinquishment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s position pending the investigation
  • An unequivocal stand against sexual harassment and sexism in the Senate, National Assembly, and across Nigeria
  • The immediate resignation of Senator Neda Imasuen from the Senate
