A man identified as Adewale Arojah, described by the Ogun State Police Command as the son of a prophet, has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a popular cleric on Facebook and defrauding individuals of more than ₦18 million.

According to the police, Arojah allegedly used a duplicated Facebook profile bearing the identity of Prophet Dr Muyiwa Akogun to gain the confidence of people seeking prayers and spiritual assistance.

How the Alleged Scam Happened

The Ogun State Police Command said the case came to light after members of the public began reporting suspicious activities being carried out in the cleric’s name.

Akogun reportedly lodged a complaint with the police on October 3, 2026, after discovering that an account allegedly impersonating him was being used to interact with members of the public.

Investigators from the Ilaro Division were subsequently deployed to identify the person behind the account.

Police Say Suspect Confessed

Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi said the suspect allegedly admitted during interrogation to impersonating the cleric on Facebook.

According to the police, the suspect used the cleric’s identity to offer what were presented as prayer services and prophecies to people looking for spiritual help.

Investigators said victims were allegedly persuaded to send money, with preliminary findings indicating that more than ₦18 million had been obtained from victims in Nigeria and abroad.

Suspect Transferred for Further Investigation

Following his arrest, Arojah was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, where further investigations are expected to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud.

Police said investigators would also work to establish whether other individuals were involved and identify additional victims.

The case highlights the growing challenge of online impersonation, particularly where fraudsters exploit the names and reputations of well-known personalities to gain the trust of unsuspecting members of the public.

Police Warn Social Media Users

The Ogun State Police Command has urged members of the public to exercise caution when communicating with religious leaders and other public figures through social media.

People seeking spiritual or other services online are encouraged to verify that they are dealing with the genuine account or representative of the person involved before sending money or sharing sensitive information.

The Nigeria Police Force has similarly warned members of the public to remain vigilant during online financial interactions and to report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.

As investigations continue, the allegations against Arojah remain subject to due legal process.
