South Korean authorities have detained President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning over his decision to impose martial law last month. A warrant for his detention was executed on Wednesday morning, January 15, 2025.

Yoon declared martial law on December 3, citing threats from “anti-state” forces. However, the move was swiftly overruled, and he was subsequently impeached by the National Assembly on December 14.

The Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on whether to permanently remove Yoon from office.

The president has maintained that his declaration of martial law was a legitimate move to protect the nation.

Yoon’s detention has sparked protests from his supporters, with clashes between them and law enforcement resulting in injuries.

The situation remains tense, with fears of renewed protests and potential violence.
