Strict movement limitations and enforcement measures will be in effect when the Lagos State Government’s monthly environmental cleanliness program resumes on April 25, 2026.

The Lagos State Government has revealed additional details regarding the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which will start on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with mobility restrictions and enforcement measures in place.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab, the exercise would occur every last Saturday of the month between the hours of 6:30 and 8:30.

Because of restricted movement around the state, residents will be able to completely clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage frontages during this time.

The commissioner warned that “defaulters will be sanctioned in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017” and that enforcement teams made up of representatives from the ministry, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Kick Against Indiscipline, Lagos Waste Management Authority, and local government sanitation inspectors would “conduct physical inspections during and after the sanitation window to ensure compliance.”

In an effort to promote healthy competition and community involvement, Wahab added that “LAWMA intervention trucks will go around to cart away bagged wastes generated during the exercise” and that “there will be rewards for the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and the cleanest street.”

“We urge all residents to take ownership of this exercise and join hands with the government in building a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos,” he stated, urging locals to support the project.

The sanitation exercise was put on pause in November 2016 because of a court judgment restricting travel during the program, but the state government had earlier announced in March that it would resume nearly ten years later.

While some residents have praised the idea, saying it might prevent irresponsible trash dumping and reduce flooding, others have expressed concerns about its execution.
