The Moro Bridge along the Ilorin–Igbeti Federal Highway collapsed in the early hours of Thursday, allegedly due to the weight of a heavy-duty truck, throwing a crucial transit route in Kwara State into disarray.

Traffic along the Ilorin–Igbeti Federal Highway in Kwara State’s Asa Local Government Area was severely disrupted by the collapse of the Moro Bridge, prompting swift action by the state administration.

The weight of a heavy-duty truck caused the bridge to collapse on Thursday at around five in the morning, cutting off a crucial transportation corridor and trapping many commuters, according to information gathered by PUNCH Online.

The development was lamented by drivers and other road users, who described it as a major setback that has hindered the flow of goods and services, increased transportation costs, and disrupted corporate operations.

“This development has negatively affected economic activities, causing delays and increasing the cost of transportation for commuters and businesses,” a businesswoman who went by the name Kafayat told PUNCH Online.

In response, Engineer Abdulquawiy Olododo, Commissioner for Works, stated the ministry’s press secretary announced an immediate traffic diversion to mitigate the impact of the tragedy.

He urged drivers to exercise caution when using alternate routes to reduce disruption and prevent further incidents.

He also stated :

“The Moro Bridge collapsed overnight, and the Kwara State Government is working with federal authorities to immediately divert traffic,” the commissioner said.

“A heavy-duty truck crossed the bridge, causing a significant disruption along the route, and the collapse happened in the early hours of today.”

Olododo stated, “Engineers have been mobilised to begin palliative work on diversion routes to reduce the hardship being experienced by road users.”

He went on to explain that the state government had received assurances from federal authorities that construction was underway on a new Moro Bridge, which is just a few meters away from the fallen span.

The commissioner went on to say that traffic management had been told to cooperate with transportation unions in order to guarantee orderly passage, even though they had begged commuters for patience.
