The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, and his associate, Steven Avuara (aka C-Pack), in Abuja.

The arrest was made on May 2, 2025, after they exited a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) branch in Garki, Area 3, Abuja.

According to the legal team representing VeryDarkMan, the activist, his mother, Mrs. Blessing Otse, and Avuara had visited the bank to inquire about suspicious deductions from Mrs. Otse’s account.

After concluding their inquiries, they were accosted at gunpoint by armed men wearing black uniforms, beaten, and blindfolded.

While the EFCC has admitted to detaining VeryDarkMan and Avuara, the legal team claims that the agency has failed to account for Mrs. Otse’s whereabouts.

The lawyers have raised alarm over her unknown location, stating that they are unable to confirm where she is being held.

The legal team also alleges that the EFCC officers violated Avuara’s constitutional rights by attempting to interrogate him without informing him of any charges against him.

The lawyers claim that the officers showed them an arrest warrant allegedly issued against VeryDarkMan for cyberstalking but refused to disclose specific allegations against Avuara.

The legal team has called on the EFCC to respect their clients’ constitutionally guaranteed rights and has exited the EFCC premises in protest.

They will continue to interface with the EFCC on this issue and work to secure the release of VeryDarkMan and his mother.
