A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted human rights activist Olamide Thomas a N10 million bail with stringent conditions.

Thomas was detained for allegedly insulting President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, and top police officials, including Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and Police Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, in a viral social media post.

The court ruled that Thomas must provide one surety in the same amount, who must submit a three-year tax clearance certificate, reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and provide two recent passport photographs along with an affidavit of means. The surety’s address must also be verified.

Justice Emeka Nwite stated that there was insufficient evidence to suggest that Thomas would jump bail if granted. The trial has been adjourned to February 18, 2025.

Thomas’s detention has sparked outrage among human rights activists, with many condemning the Nigerian Police Force’s abuse and irresponsible conduct.

Olamide Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian human rights activist, vowed to continue fighting against the police force’s abuse, stating that although the bail conditions were stringent and unduly oppressive, they would not deter their efforts.
