United States President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance on imposing tariffs on Canadian imports, sparking a heated trade dispute between the two nations.
Trump had previously ordered 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on goods from China, raising concerns of a global trade war.
In response to Trump’s new trade measures, Canada announced 25% tariffs on a range of U.S. imports. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement, cautioning Americans about the consequences of Trump’s actions.
Canada will impose tariffs on C$155 billion ($107 billion) worth of U.S. goods.
However, Trump remains unfazed, stating on Truth Social that the U.S. pays hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada.
He argued that the U.S. does not need anything Canada has, citing the country’s unlimited energy resources, ability to manufacture its own cars, and abundant lumber supplies.
Trump claimed that without U.S. subsidies, Canada would cease to exist as a viable country.
He suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the U.S., promising lower taxes and better military protection for Canadians.
The trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada continues to escalate, with both countries imposing tariffs on each other’s goods.
