MTN Apologizes for Data Price Hike Amid Customer Backlash
MTN Nigeria has apologized to its subscribers for the recent 200% increase in data bundle prices, describing it as an error.
The telecommunications giant made this admission in a statement, urging customers to forgive and move forward.
The price hike had sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many subscribers calling for a boycott. MTN initially defended the increase, stating that it was necessary to enhance services.
However, in its latest statement, the company took a more conciliatory tone, saying, “Please forgive and forget. You matter, and we will never stop showing you how much.”
Despite the apology, MTN has not confirmed whether it will reverse or reduce the new pricing. The situation continues to generate debate among subscribers, with many questioning whether telecom companies are acting within regulatory limits.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had granted telecom companies permission to raise prices by up to 50%, citing economic challenges. However, MTN’s increases far exceeded the approved cap, with some bundles seeing price hikes of up to 200%.
