Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, to cancel the bail conditions imposed on activist Omoyele Sowore and ensure his immediate release from police custody.

Falana described the requirement of involving senior civil servants or public officers in the bail of individuals accused of criminal offences as “unlawful and unprecedented.”

He cited a Court of Appeal ruling that declared such practices as illegal.

Sowore was arrested by the police over allegations of cyberstalking and was granted bail with conditions that included producing a level 16 civil servant as a surety and surrendering his passport.

However, Sowore rejected the bail conditions, describing them as “illegal.”

Falana urged the police to respect legal precedents and uphold the rule of law, stressing the need for Sowore’s unconditional release without further delay.
