Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has made a shocking accusation against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, alleging that he is enforcing lawlessness in the state’s local government areas.
This accusation comes amid the alleged illegal occupation of local government offices by sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors.
Governor Adeleke made these remarks during a meeting with top British diplomats, led by Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter.
He claimed that the IGP is imposing illegality on local councils in Osun State, which is a serious threat to democracy in Nigeria.
The governor expressed his commitment to ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair local government election in the state, despite the challenges posed by the police and opposition parties.
He stated that Osun is facing a coordinated assault by security forces who are enabling violations of the democratic process.
Adeleke also criticized the police for supporting the opposition’s illegal actions, saying, “The opposition supported by the police went ahead to break into the local government secretariats. Security men openly supported them to enforce illegality.”
The governor called on the diplomatic community to take note of the ongoing crisis in Osun state, particularly the negative role of security agents. He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law in a democracy, stating, “There is no room for self-help.”
