A 500-Level Covenant University student passed away following a football game due to breathing issues.
Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, a 500-level student at Covenant University (CU) in Ota, Ogun State, passed away after passing out on campus during a football game.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Timothy A. Anake issued a statement in which the institution rejected allegations of carelessness or insufficient medical attention, attributing his death to an unreported underlying heart ailment.
According to the statement, Tunmise left the Chancellor’s Cup match because of fatigue and leg soreness. His breathing became difficult shortly after, and his condition deteriorated.
He was taken by fellow students to the university’s medical centre, where medical staff reportedly used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but their attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The institution also stated that its management team helped the family and stayed on site during the tragedy.
Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, a 500-level student, died after collapsing during a crucial Chancellor’s Cup football game, casting a devastating shadow on Covenant University.
However, some students disputed this allegation, saying that prayers took precedence over urgent medical attention and that essential supplies like oxygen and nebulizers were unavailable.
The vice-chancellor insisted that neither personnel nor equipment was in limited supply. Concerns regarding differences between the university’s story and eyewitness accounts were raised in a statement purportedly from the deceased’s family.
The family brought up unsolved problems, such as the timing of events, his health when help came, and the sufficiency of the medical response, and questioned the pace at which findings were presented without an independent review.
They said that in order to get a fair assessment, they are looking into eyewitness reports and medical data.
