A Nigerian man who forced his ex-girlfriend to take abortion pills was sentenced to nine years in prison in Ireland.
An Irish court sentenced Adeleke Adelani, a Nigerian national, to nine years in prison for coercing a lady into taking abortion pills and illegally ending her pregnancy in what the judge called a “severe act of physical and emotional violence.”
According to the BBC, the prisoner was sentenced on Thursday at the Letterkenny Circuit Court in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland.
Adelani had already entered a guilty plea in Letterkenny on February 14, 2020, for illegally ending the life of a fetus. He caused the illegal termination of a pregnancy and was sentenced to 11 years in prison, with the last two years suspended.
In addition, he was given a five-year term for assault causing hurt, with the final 12 months suspended. The two sentences must be read together.
For a different offense, Adelani is presently incarcerated for a further seven years.
Judge John Aylmer, who delivered the verdict, called the crime “extremely premeditated,” noting that it required much planning and online investigation.
He claimed that the defendant was fully aware of the woman’s stated desire to keep the child and the terrible psychological effects of ending the pregnancy against her will.
According to court documents, the woman fell pregnant by Adelani in 2019, and the two parties had decided to end the pregnancy. But she chose to retain the child when she fell pregnant again in 2020.
Adelani invited the woman to his Donegal house on Valentine’s Day in 2020, implying that he agreed with her choice. Prosecutors told the court that instead, he made her swallow five 200 mg misoprostol tablets, which are normally prescribed and taken under a doctor’s supervision.

Adelani told the court that if she didn’t take the pills, he would beat the nine-week-old fetus out of her.
Once he had made her ingest pills and told her how to do it, he locked her in a bedroom and went out to get a pregnancy test.
At around 14:20 on February 14, 2020, the woman, who had met Adelani on Snapchat, called the Irish police, the gardaí. Soon after, officers showed up at the property and took him into custody.
Due to his refusal to reveal the PIN, his cell phone was confiscated but remained locked for four years. The device was eventually made available to investigators prior to his November 2025 trial date.
In open court, Adelani played a taped phone call in which she informed the woman she needed to have an abortion.
The woman became very ill after being made to take the medications, according to the medical data that was provided. She became feverish, had excruciating cramps, shook uncontrollably, and passed blood clots in excruciating pain.
The woman stated that she had forgiven the offender in a victim impact statement that was read throughout the proceedings, but she made it plain that forgiveness did not mean that she accepted his acts.
“He took much more than just my freedom when he wrongfully imprisoned me and forced the termination of my nine-week pregnancy,” she added. “He abducted my kid.” My sense of security was stolen by him. I had already started to prepare and enjoy this future, but he stole it.
The court heard that Adelani refused to cooperate and made no admissions during police interviews. He later stated that he accepted full responsibility for his acts and expressed regret for the suffering in a letter that was read aloud in court.
Detective Inspector Paul McGee praised the victim’s actions as “unwavering strength and resolve” during investigations.
