Nigeria is mourning the passing of its former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who died today in London at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by his longtime aide, Garba Shehu, on Sunday afternoon.
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un. The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Shehu shared in a public statement.
Buhari, a retired Major General and former military ruler, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
Known for his anti-corruption stance and a controversial but influential tenure, Buhari remained an iconic and polarizing figure in Nigerian politics.
His death comes amid reports that both he and another former Nigerian leader, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, had been receiving treatment abroad for undisclosed health conditions.
Muhammadu Buhari’s career spanned decades—from his role in Nigeria’s military government in the 1980s to his democratic presidency decades later.
