Oba Sikiru Adetona, The Awujale of Ijebuland, Passes Away at 91 After 65-Year Reign
Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91, ending a remarkable reign that spanned 65 years.
He ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers and a towering presence in both the cultural and political landscape of the country.
A source from the palace confirmed to Sahara Reporters that the respected monarch died in a Lagos hospital.
However, an official announcement is pending due to traditional rites and protocol involving the Ogun State Government.
“It is confirmed, but we cannot officially announce it yet,” the source explained. “Such matters must follow due traditional and state procedures.”
Oba Adetona was not only a royal figurehead but also a bold and influential voice in national matters.
Throughout his reign, he championed justice, governance reform, and the preservation of Yoruba culture, earning respect far beyond the borders of Ijebuland.
His reported death comes on the heels of another national loss—former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari also passed away on Sunday afternoon in London. The back-to-back losses have cast a shadow of grief over the nation.
Oba Adetona hailed from the royal House of Anikinaiya and was widely admired for his intellect, candor, and lifelong commitment to public service.
