Days after the bride allegedly slapped her mother-in-law over food, the marriage ends. (Video)
A heated argument over food apparently turned physical, shocking both families and ending the wedding celebration in pandemonium.
In a widely shared video that depicts an apparent altercation between a bride and her mother-in-law over food that purportedly led to the dissolution of a marriage, many Nigerians disagree on who was at fault.
On July 20, the video debuted on an Edo State radio and television station. On Friday, it gained popularity.
According to the broadcaster, the event occurred during a wedding reception after the food ran out. Only the part that had been set aside for the bride’s parents was supposedly met by a pair from the groom’s family who arrived late.
According to the report, the bride turned down the groom’s mother’s discreet request for some of the leftover food to be delivered to the long-distance guests.
It further stated that the bride took the food back and poured it into the cooler when the mother-in-law tried to serve it herself. This caused the elder woman to slap the bride, who then allegedly smacked her again.
The groom apparently tried to cancel the marriage two days after the reception, but he remained composed until it was over, according to the program.
But in the same show, attorney Franka Osie highlighted that Nigerian law prohibits a statutory divorce after just two days of marriage.
In a similar vein, another attorney clarified that under Nigeria’s Matrimonial Causes Act, couples in a statutory marriage typically cannot file for divorce until they have been wed for at least two years, though courts may permit an earlier divorce in extraordinary circumstances involving cruelty or hardship, and annulment may also be an option in certain circumstances.
Since then, the report has sparked a lot of discussion on social media, with users expressing varying opinions about the bride, mother-in-law, and groom’s behavior.
Some claimed that neither woman behaved properly, and they also blamed the groom for not establishing limits that could have stopped either woman from acting in that manner.
Many comments defended the bride, claiming that nobody seemed to be holding the mother-in-law responsible for assaulting her son’s wife and that she only reacted after being hit first.
However, some criticized the bride’s behaviour, claiming that striking her mother-in-law during an argument over food was a reflection of her upbringing.
Additionally, several pointed out that disagreements between in-laws over food, beverages, and mementos are a common occurrence at Nigerian weddings and can reappear years after marriage.
