The Federal Government has placed a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
The decision, approved during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, is aimed at halting the rapid spread of underutilised institutions and tackling the strain on existing educational resources.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who presented the proposal, explained that the move is crucial to improving the quality of education nationwide.

He noted that many federal tertiary institutions currently face inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and declining academic standards — challenges that make further expansion unsustainable for now.

President Bola Tinubu, who presided over the meeting, stressed the need to focus on strengthening existing institutions so they can operate at full capacity before considering new establishments.
This policy means that no new federal universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education will be established until at least 2032.
