FG Reveals a Five-Year Strategy to Address Illegal Trade and Alcohol Abuse.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new five-year plan to combat the illicit alcohol trade, tighten regulations, and lessen the negative effects of alcohol.
In order to address the escalating issues associated with alcohol consumption and illicit sales throughout Nigeria, the Federal Government has developed a significant five-year plan.
In accordance with the strategy, the government will strengthen treatment services, regulate the marketing of alcohol, enforce age restrictions, raise public awareness of the risks associated with alcohol consumption, and ensure that alcohol products are secure and appropriately tracked along the supply chain.
The health system cannot address alcohol-related harm on its own, according to Muhammad Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health.
All government departments must take action since the problem impacts economic growth, public health, and good governance.
He emphasized that Nigeria requires responsibility, defined roles, and sectoral collaboration.
Reducing harm and improving health,

Monitoring and evaluation
Are the four primary pillars of the policy.
Nigerians aged 15 and older drank 3.2 liters of pure alcohol on average in 2024, according to the most recent data from the World Health Organization.
The authorities has connected alcohol consumption to issues with traffic safety.
According to data from the Federal Road Safety Corps, driving while intoxicated was a key contributing factor in 9,570 traffic accidents and 5,421 fatalities that occurred nationally in 2024.
Another significant issue is the illicit alcohol market.
According to industry estimates from a 2024 poll, about 40% of the market is made up of illicit wines and spirits.
Every year, the government loses more than 428 billion naira due to this.
The strategy is in line with Nigeria’s international obligations to the African Union, sustainable development goals, and health guidelines, as well as President Tinubu’s development vision.
At the launch, representatives from a number of government departments, including Finance, Trade, Customs, Road Safety, and others, promised to cooperate in carrying out the plan.
