Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Water and Environment, has dismissed claims that the state is plagued by a persistent smell.

Instead, Wahab argues that Lagos is undergoing a transformation, driven by the state government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

In a statement, Wahab emphasized that Lagos is evolving towards sustainable waste processing, modernized landfill management, cleaner waterways, and structured sanitation systems. He noted that waste and sanitation challenges in a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos require structural solutions, rather than superficial fixes.

“The Lagos State Government is fully committed to environmental sustainability and has developed a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to ensure a clean, resilient, and livable city,” Wahab said.

“Waste and sanitation challenges in a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos require structural solutions—not soundbites or political rhetorics. Lagos is not ‘smelling’; Lagos is evolving—toward sustainable waste processing, modernized landfill management, cleaner waterways, and structured sanitation systems.”
