The Los Angeles Lakers have been sold to Mark Walter, co-owner of Chelsea Football Club and owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, in a record-breaking deal valued at $10 billion.

This transaction marks the highest valuation ever for a professional sports franchise, surpassing the recent sale of the Boston Celtics for $6.1 billion.

The Buss family, who have owned the Lakers since 1979, will retain a minority stake of at least 15% and Jeanie Buss will continue to serve as team governor.

Mark Walter already held a 26% minority stake in the Lakers, which he acquired in 2021, and will now take over majority ownership.

The sale reflects the Lakers’ immense market value, driven by their global fan base, lucrative media contracts, and storied history.

With this acquisition, Walter’s sports empire will expand to include one of the NBA’s most iconic franchises. Lakers legend Magic Johnson praised the deal, saying Walter is a winner who will bring resources needed to win championships.

The Lakers‘ new ownership structure is expected to bring significant changes, with Walter’s competitive drive and commitment to excellence likely to shape the team’s future.

The deal is subject to approval by the NBA’s board of governors.
