The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has evacuated its members from crisis-ridden communities in Yelwata and Daudu, Benue State, to safer locations in Makurdi, the state capital.

This move follows renewed attacks that left approximately 200 people dead and many communities in fear.

The NYSC Benue State Coordinator, Mrs. Veronica Garba, confirmed that the evacuation was carried out in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.

Corps members were relocated to secure shelters, including family residences and association offices within Makurdi.

These shelters include facilities of the Nigeria Corpers Christian Fellowship (NCCF), National Association of Catholic Corps Members (NACCM), and Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN).

Mrs. Garba assured parents that their children are safe and receiving good care. “We understand the anxiety in times like this, but we want to reassure parents that their children are in safe hands,” she said.

“All those who were evacuated are safe, accounted for, and are receiving good care.” The NYSC has conducted a headcount and confirmed that no corps member is missing .

The evacuation comes after President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Makurdi, where he ordered security agencies to restore peace in the affected communities and bring perpetrators of the violence to justice.

Mrs. Garba attributed the prompt response to the appointment of new security chiefs in the state, describing it as a positive step towards restoring peace.
