Manchester United Make Approach for Sporting Striker Viktor Gyokeres
Manchester United have made an initial approach for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres through intermediaries, with head coach Ruben Amorim a big admirer of his former striker.
Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 games last season, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.
Viktor Gyokeres has a gentleman’s agreement to leave Sporting this summer for offers above £58m, despite a release clause of around £84m. United are exploring the conditions of a potential deal for the 27-year-old.
United are in the market for a striker, regardless of Rasmus Hojlund’s future, and are looking at a number of players in that position. The club is also expected to bid again for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, after having their first bid of £55m rejected.
There are reports suggesting Thomas Frank will try and tempt Mbeumo to go to Tottenham Hotspur if he takes over as their new head coach, but it’s understood the player wants to join United. United remain optimistic a deal can be struck.
Gyokeres’ potential move to United would be a reunion with Amorim, the manager who helped bring the best out of him at Sporting. United have already agreed a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, and the transfer is subject to visa and registration.
