Legendary Brazilian star Neymar Jr. announced his retirement from international football after Brazil was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Foot-Africa reports that the 34-year-old Santos forward made his decision after his team overcame Universidad Central 4-2 in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana knockout stage playoffs, ending months of speculation about a possible return to the national squad.

Declaring that he had achieved history, was extremely happy, and had sacrificed his life and blood in the never-ending quest for the yellow jersey, Neymar announced that his time with the national team was over and that he no longer wanted to play.

In the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Neymar made his final appearance for Brazil against Norway. He scored a penalty kick in stoppage time, but the goal was insufficient to keep Brazil from losing 2-1 and ending their chances of winning a sixth World Cup.

After surpassing Pelé’s long-standing record of 77 goals with 80, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player departs the national team as Brazil’s all-time top men’s striker.

He participated in four FIFA World Cups and several Copa América competitions.
