The Niger State House of Assembly has called on Governor Umaru Bago to place an immediate ban on “Markers’ Day” and sign-out celebrations in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.
The resolution, passed during Thursday’s plenary, followed a motion by Muhammad Idris, member representing Tafa Constituency, who expressed concern over the growing trend of unruly behaviour among graduating students during these events.
Originally introduced as a harmless farewell gesture, sign-out activities have now become notorious for indecent dressing, public disturbances, and other forms of misconduct. Idris warned that the practice undermines both the moral and intellectual standards the state’s education system strives to uphold.
“The ongoing trend of signing out from schools, which is presumably intended as a celebration, has recently been characterised by unruly behaviour and misconduct,” he stated, urging the Governor to issue an executive order to halt the celebrations.

Deputy Speaker Afiniki Dauda, who presided over the session, described the move as timely and pledged to work with the Governor and the Ministry of Education to ensure swift enforcement of the ban.
In a related development, the Assembly also passed a Private Member Bill to amend the law establishing the Minna Institute of Technology and Innovation.
Lawmakers said the changes will align the institution’s operations with modern educational demands and industry realities.
