The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a nationwide protest against the recent 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs approved by the Nigerian government.

The protest, scheduled for Tuesday, February 4, aims to express the NLC’s opposition to the tariff hike, which it describes as “insensitive” and “unjustifiable”.

According to the NLC, the tariff increase will further burden Nigerian workers and citizens, who are already struggling with economic hardships, including a minimum wage of N70,000, steep rises in petrol and food prices, and overall inflation.

The Congress is demanding the immediate suspension of the tariff hike, a constructive dialogue with stakeholders to reconsider the adjustment, and a reversal of the decision to prioritize corporate profits over public well-being.

The Congress has urged all affiliates, state councils, and civil society groups to mobilize for the protest. It has also called on Nigerian workers, those in the informal sector, and the general public to join the cause.

If the NLC’s demands are not addressed, the organization has threatened to escalate its actions, including a possible nationwide boycott of telecommunication services and other forms of protest.
