Nigerian Government Accused of Embezzling N5.5 Billion in Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention Case

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Nigerian government of exploiting its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, for financial gain.

Each of Kanu’s court appearances costs Nigerian taxpayers an estimated N500 million, totaling N5.5 billion since his arrest in June 2021.

IPOB claims that senior security officials and judicial officers benefit from Kanu’s prolonged detention. The group expressed concerns over Kanu’s treatment in detention, alleging he has been denied basic human dignity.

IPOB argues that the funds spent on Kanu’s court appearances represent a blatant misuse of public funds, particularly given Nigeria’s current economic hardship.

The group has called on the international community, human rights organizations, and global leaders to intervene and hold the Nigerian government accountable.

IPOB has demanded Kanu’s unconditional release, warning that his continued detention could further inflame sentiments in the South-East, where his influence remains strong.
