Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has banned homosexuality, transgender identity, cross-dressing, tattooing, and other activities in the Nigerian military.

The ban is part of new regulations outlined in Section 26 of the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service (HAFCTCS). The rules aim to maintain discipline and adherence to the armed forces’ code of conduct.

According to the regulations, military personnel are prohibited from engaging in activities such as homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, and cross-dressing. They are also barred from body piercing, tattooing, disorderly conduct, and drunkenness, whether on or off duty.

Additionally, personnel are forbidden from engaging in amorous relationships with subordinates or their spouses. They are also required to meet their financial obligations, such as paying vehicle licensing and insurance fees on time.

The revised regulations were signed into effect by President Tinubu in December 2024.

A military source described the timing of the signing as strategic, coming just before the inauguration of Donald Trump as the US President.
