Atiku’s Resignation from PDP is Familiar, We Expect His Return – Acting Chairman Damagum
The Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Iliya Damagum, has downplayed the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying it’s not the first time—and likely not the last.
Speaking to journalists on Friday at the Bauchi State Government House, Damagum addressed Atiku’s recent exit from the party, calling it a recurring political move.
“Well, it is expected because this is not the first time, and I don’t think it will be the last time. We are still expecting him any moment from now,” he said.
Atiku Abubakar officially resigned from the PDP on Wednesday, July 17, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State. In the letter, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and expressed disappointment with the current direction of the party, which he said has strayed from its founding ideals.

This isn’t the first time Atiku has left the PDP. Over the years, his political journey has seen multiple party switches, often followed by high-profile returns.
Meanwhile, Dele Momodu, a former PDP presidential aspirant and media personality, also announced his resignation from the party this week. In a separate letter dated July 17, Momodu cited what he described as the party’s hijacking by “antidemocratic forces.”
“The party has become a carcass taken over by undemocratic elements, both from within and outside,” Momodu stated, confirming his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
What’s Next for PDP?
With two major political figures exiting within the same week, the PDP faces fresh scrutiny over its internal cohesion and leadership structure.
However, Damagum’s comments suggest that the party isn’t closing the door on Atiku’spotential return.
