Residents of Abia State observed a sit-at-home order on Friday to commemorate Biafra Day, bringing economic activities to a standstill in major cities like Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had called for the shutdown to remember the heroes of the Biafran struggle.

Despite security measures put in place by the state government, residents largely obeyed the order.

Streets were empty, markets and shops were closed, and commercial banks offered skeletal services.

Motor parks and schools were also shut down, with only a few tricycle operators seen on the roads.

Some residents expressed support for the sit-at-home order, citing the need to remember the sacrifices made by Biafran heroes. “We are not observing a sit-at-home order, but remembering our heroes past who lost their lives in the struggle for Biafra,” said Ikechi Emelike, a resident of Umuahia.

The Abia State Police Command and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) took steps to ensure security during the sit-at-home order.

The police commissioner, CP Danladi Isa, instructed officers to protect police bases and government infrastructure, while the NSCDC commandant, Commandant Akinsola Aderemi, assured the public that his officers were prepared to respond to any emergencies.
