Breaking News: Israel and Iran Agree to US-Brokered Ceasefire After 12-Day War
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel has accepted a US-brokered ceasefire proposal with Iran, bringing an end to the 12-day war that rocked the Middle East.
The ceasefire, negotiated with key diplomatic efforts from the United States and Qatar, was officially announced by US President Donald Trump.
Terms of the Ceasefire
According to Trump, the ceasefire will be phased in over 24 hours, with Iran halting its operations first, followed by Israel 12 hours later.
Both countries have agreed to remain “peaceful and respectful” during each phase of the ceasefire process. The agreement also includes:
Mutual Halt to Military Actions: No further strikes by land, air, or sea
No-Fly Zones: Temporarily established over Iranian and Israeli skies
Observers: Qatar and Turkey will act as observers to ensure the agreement is honored
Indirect Dialogue Channels: Channels between Jerusalem and Tehran will remain open
The 12-day war between Israel and Iran saw intense exchanges, including Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear and military facilities and Iranian missile barrages targeting US bases in Qatar and Iraq.
The conflict resulted in hundreds of casualties in Iran and dozens in Israel.
Netanyahu warned Iran against breaching the agreed truce, stating that “Israel will respond forcefully to any violation of the ceasefire.”
He also reported to Israel’s security cabinet that Israel had achieved all of its war goals, including removing the threat of Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
The ceasefire announcement led to a 4.2% dip in oil prices, falling to $97/barrel. The agreement is seen as a fragile but necessary step back from the brink of regional war.
