Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned recent airstrikes on Iranian territory by the United States and Israel, labeling them as “absolutely unprovoked aggression” against Iran.
During a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s long-standing alliance with Tehran and pledged support for the Iranian people.
The tensions between Iran and the US-Israel alliance have been escalating, with the US dropping bunker-buster bombs on Iran’s underground nuclear facilities and Israel bombing a political prison in Tehran.
In response, Iran launched six missiles at US military bases in Qatar and Iraq, prompting Qatar to shut its airspace. These developments have raised fears of a broader war in the Middle East, with international observers warning that the situation could spiral into a multi-front confrontation involving global powers.
While Putin’s statement was diplomatically strong, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov added a layer of caution, noting that the exact form of support would depend on Iran’s requests.
Peskov also stated that Russia is prepared to act as a mediator in the intensifying standoff between Iran and the US-Israel alliance. This move highlights Russia’s intent to play a key diplomatic role in the emerging crisis ³.
Tehran also reportedly supplied Moscow with armed drones used in the ongoing war in Ukraine, while the two nations continue to align on regional security matters and counter-US influence in the Middle East.
Putin also held a separate meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani on Monday to discuss the broader regional fallout from the strikes.
