A popular video of a student perched on a politician’s knee while visiting a polytechnic has been explained by a campaign organization.
A politician’s campaign staff had to come forth with an explanation after a video of him and a student went viral and sparked strong online reactions.
According to the candidate’s team, students from the school’s banking department visited his campaign office to interview him and extend an invitation to participate in their program.
The campaign claims that when the students came, there weren’t enough chairs for everyone, so the candidate invited one of them to sit on his lap so the interview could go on.
He was also seen momentarily stroking the student’s leg in the video, which caused a variety of responses on social media.
The team argued that the candidate’s behaviour was an impulsive, paternal gesture with no improper motive.
The campaign claimed that political rivals were purposefully misrepresenting a typical exchange between a political figure and students looking to support their cause.
It advised the public to ignore what it described as misleading narratives in the video, pointing out that individuals who know the candidate are aware of his fatherly relationship with youth.
The campaign also urged social media users and media outlets to report responsibly, arguing that sensationalism on digital platforms should not be exploited to harm people’s reputations.
Nigerians were exhorted to reject what it called “cheap political tactics” and to concentrate on ideas, competence, progress, and the welfare of the populace in the 2027 governorship race.
