The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has strongly criticized the recent decision by governors in northern Nigeria to shut down schools for five weeks during Ramadan.

This move, which affects both Muslim and Christian students, as well as Christian-owned schools, has sparked concerns about the country’s secular nature and the rights of all citizens.

The CBCN has expressed deep concern that this decision undermines Nigeria’s secular principles and disregards the rights of non-Muslim students.

The bishops argue that the extended school closure will not only disrupt the academic calendar but also jeopardize the education and future of millions of Nigerian children.

The CBCN urges the federal government to intervene and ensure that the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of their faith or background, are protected.

The bishops also call on the governors of the affected states to reconsider their decision and explore alternative arrangements that respect the rights
