Kwara South Communities Deserted as Terror Attacks Escalate — Yoruba Union Blames Gov AbdulRazaq, Issues 7-Day Ultimatum

Residents of Kwara South are fleeing their ancestral homes in fear as suspected Fulani herdsmen intensify violent attacks across the region.

The Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá (Yoruba Union), has accused Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of neglecting the zone and demanded immediate action within seven days.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the group’s Convener, Olusola Badero, and Home Director, Princess Balogun, the union alleged that while the governor collects monthly security votes, he has failed to provide transparency on how the funds are being utilised to combat the worsening crisis.

The Yoruba Union lamented that communities in Ifelodun, Irepodun, Ekiti, and Isin local government areas have been repeatedly invaded, forcing hundreds of residents to abandon their homes and farmlands.

People have been killed, kidnapped, and extorted for ransom. Those left behind now live in constant fear. The governor has shown no political will to confront this menace,” the group stated.

They warned that the abandonment of farmlands could cripple food production and devastate local economies, further worsening poverty in the region.

Governor Accused of Favoring Ilorin Over Kwara South

The group accused Governor AbdulRazaq of concentrating development and security resources on Ilorin, the state capital, while neglecting other parts of Kwara.

“It is unacceptable that lives and properties in one part of Kwara are seen as less valuable than in another,” the statement read.

The union argued that this neglect has created resentment and a sense of marginalisation among Kwara South indigenes.

Ultimatum to Governor AbdulRazaq

Accusing the governor of incompetence, the Yoruba Union declared that if he cannot protect lives and property, he should resign.

“We are giving Governor AbdulRahman a seven-day ultimatum to restore peace and confidence in the region, or we will take to the streets to protest and show the world how unconcerned he is about the plight of our people,” the statement warned.

The union recalled that following the eviction of Seriki Fulani of Igangan, Abdulkadir Saliu Abdulkadri, and his followers from Oyo State by activist Sunday Igboho, many relocated to Kwara South, sparking incessant attacks and kidnappings in the region.

“Our ancestral land does not belong to the Fulani race. We will not fold our arms while our people are killed and displaced by armed herdsmen determined to take over our land by force,” the group vowed.

Rising Tensions in Kwara South

The Yoruba Union stressed that continued government silence could fuel resentment and distrust among the people.

They warned that failure to act decisively may permanently alter the cultural and socio-economic fabric of Kwara South.
