Trump Orders 100 Percent Tariff on Foreign-Made Movies, Claiming Hollywood Was Being “Devastated”
Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States, citing a national security threat and claiming the American film industry is dying a “very fast death” due to foreign production incentives.
The President authorized relevant government agencies, including the Department of Commerce, to immediately begin implementing the tariffs.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the government’s intention to move forward with the tariffs, saying “We’re on it”.
However, details on how the tariffs would be implemented, including whether they would apply to streaming services and theatrical releases, and how they would be calculated, are yet to be provided.
This move follows Trump’s appointment of Hollywood veterans Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson to lead efforts to revitalize the US film industry.
The industry has seen a significant shift in production to other countries due to tax incentives, with about half of the spending on movie and TV projects with budgets over $40 million going outside the US in 2023.
