A 13-year-old boy from Long Island, New York, is attracting international attention after gaining acceptance into a master’s programme at New York University (NYU).
Joe Petraro-Hyppolite has already achieved several academic milestones years ahead of the traditional educational timeline.
He is currently completing his undergraduate studies and is expected to graduate before beginning his postgraduate programme at NYU.
From High School at 11 to Graduate School
At age 10, he reportedly scored 1,590 out of 1,600 on the SAT, another achievement that drew attention to his exceptional academic abilities. His IQ has also been reported as 168.
The teenager subsequently pursued undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he has studied alongside students considerably older than him.
Despite the significant age difference, Joe has continued to progress academically and is now preparing for the next stage of his education.
Preparing for a Master’s at NYU
Joe has been accepted into a master’s programme at New York University, where he plans to study sports management, with interests that include kinesiology and biology. He is expected to begin the programme after completing his undergraduate studies.
Speaking about the opportunity, Joe acknowledged that starting graduate school at such a young age comes with some nervousness, but said he is excited about the opportunities ahead.
His reported admission has also raised the possibility that he could become one of NYU’s youngest graduate students, although reports say the university is still verifying whether he would be its youngest ever.
His Academic Ability Did Not Mean Everything Came Easily
Despite his extraordinary academic record, Joe has emphasized that his achievements did not happen without effort.
He explained that being gifted does not mean he automatically knows everything. Instead, he still has to learn and study before mastering new material.
His mother, Anne Petraro-Hyppolite, said his achievements are particularly meaningful because he previously faced educational challenges and was placed in special education classes. She described him as someone with a strong love of learning.
More Than Just Academics
Joe’s interests extend beyond books and classrooms. He has also volunteered at a nursing home in Long Island, helping residents and spending time supporting others.
Interestingly, despite his planned master’s studies in sports management and his broad academic interests, Joe has said that he hopes to pursue a career in palaeontology in the future.
His story has therefore attracted attention not only because of his age but also because of the unusual combination of academic achievement, community involvement and long-term ambitions.
