Attack on Enugu Checkpoint: Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers, Set Vehicles Ablaze
An attack on a police checkpoint in Enugu State has claimed the lives of two officers. The incident occurred on Thursday evening in Agbogugu, along the Enugu-Ozalla-Port Harcourt Old Road, in the Awgu Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses described the attackers as gunmen suspected to be armed robbers. They set fire to two vehicles—a patrol van and a Sienna vehicle—used by the police officers for checkpoint operations. The vehicles were completely destroyed, and the attackers made off with the officers’ weapons.
According to an eyewitness, the attackers faced little resistance and calmly drove through Agbogugu town as they made their escape. The officers who were killed have been identified as the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) and another officer, known locally as “Big.”
This incident is part of a disturbing trend of attacks across the Enugu North Senatorial District, where multiple individuals, including police officers, have been killed in recent months.
The eyewitness account of the attack is harrowing: “Yesterday evening, gunmen suspected to be armed robbers attacked a police checkpoint in Agbogugu along Enugu-Ozalla-Port Harcourt Old Road, killing two police officers.
They also burned two vehicles, a Sienna and a police patrol van… I learned that the assailants carted away the slain officers’ weapons.”
