Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns about the alarming rate of poverty in Nigeria, Thenewsnaija reports.
Speaking at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, Obi revealed that Nigeria now has more poor people than China, Indonesia, and Vietnam combined.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s leadership has failed to invest in education and healthcare, exacerbating the poverty crisis.
He cited statistics showing that while China had 750 million people living in poverty in 1990, Nigeria had the least number of poor people among the four countries. However, today, Nigeria’s situation has drastically changed.
Obi also highlighted Nigeria’s economic decline, noting that the country’s GDP per capita is now below one-tenth of China’s and about one-fifth of Indonesia’s and Vietnam’s. He emphasized the need for competent leadership to address the country’s development challenges.
