Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the state of politics in Nigeria.
Speaking at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, Obi condemned the transactional nature of politics in Nigeria, where people are paid to cause confusion.
Obi revealed that some Nigerian youths are paid as low as N20,000 to abuse individuals who are fighting for their lives. He noted that this is a result of the country’s failed leadership, which has prioritized personal interests over the welfare of its citizens.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s leadership has failed to invest in education and healthcare, which has led to a significant increase in poverty. He cited statistics showing that Nigeria now has more poor people than China, Indonesia, and Vietnam combined.
Obi also highlighted the country’s economic decline, noting that Nigeria’s GDP per capita is now below one-tenth of China’s and about one-fifth of Indonesia’s and Vietnam’s.
He emphasized the need for competent leadership to achieve Nigeria’s desired development.
