Residents of Daneji and surrounding neighborhoods in Kano State were thrown into panic this week after a python reportedly escaped from the private residence of former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris—currently on trial for the alleged embezzlement of ₦109.5 billion.

The large reptile was discovered alongside other wild animals, including a crocodile and a lion cub, in Idris’ home. The startling revelation triggered alarm in the densely populated areas of Mandawari, Kabara, and Soron Dinki.

The Kano Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency confirmed that all the animals have now been evacuated and safely relocated to the Kano Zoo.

Speaking during a radio interview on Thursday, the agency’s Managing Director, Sadik Kura Muhammad, explained that while Ahmed Idris possessed a valid license to keep the animals, growing public concern necessitated their removal.

“The python slithered out of his home, prompting widespread fear. Though the lion is still a cub and poses no immediate danger, we acted swiftly to avoid escalation,” Muhammad said. “We moved the animals overnight to prevent any further distress.”

He emphasized that the license issued to Idris was legal under the state’s Wild Animal Law, which permits private ownership of certain species—both endangered and non-endangered—provided the owner meets specific conditions including secure habitat, safety, and annual renewal of the license.

Despite legal compliance, residents were far from reassured. Aminu Balarabe, who lives nearby, said the escape shattered the community’s peace. “We couldn’t sleep properly. Whether it’s a cub or not, wild animals don’t belong here.”

Another neighbor, Hayatuddeen Muhammad, voiced frustration: “That house is surrounded by families. It doesn’t matter how nice a person is—wild animals shouldn’t be in a residential setting.”

The incident has prompted police action. Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed that Idris has been invited for questioning. An investigation is ongoing to determine any breaches in wildlife regulations or potential public endangerment.

Adding to the controversy, a video recently surfaced showing Idris casually handling a large monitor lizard in his living room. The footage went viral and sparked further outrage.

Idris, who served as Accountant General during the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, was suspended in 2022 after his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of diverting more than ₦100 billion in public funds.

For now, the animals are under professional care. But for residents of Daneji and beyond, the fear lingers. As one local put it: “This wasn’t just a snake in someone’s backyard—it was a reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind high walls and high offices.”
