UN-Backed Organisation Calls on Tinubu to Act on Benue Killings or Resign
The International Organisation for Human Rights Development and Environment (IOHRDE), a UN-recognised body, has condemned the Nigerian government over ongoing killings in Benue State and other parts of the country.
IOHRDE criticised the government’s “deafening silence” and “gross failure” to secure lives and property, calling it unacceptable in a democratic society. The organisation has given President Tinubu’s administration an ultimatum to demonstrate leadership or resign.
The Situation in Benue
The killings in Benue have sparked widespread outrage, with IOHRDE highlighting the need for competent leadership with the capacity and political will to confront crises.
The organisation stressed that Nigeria is fast descending into a state of emergency due to leadership failure, administrative weakness, and poor governance structures.
IOHRDE is calling on the Nigerian government to:
- Protect lives and property: Demonstrate leadership by securing citizens and upholding constitutional responsibilities.
- Prioritise competence and character: Abandon politics of tribe, religion, and patronage, and demand capable leaders.
- International community intervention: Apply diplomatic pressure to prevent further humanitarian crisis deterioration.
