Elijah Olorunsuwa, a lecturer at the University of Ilorin, was detained by police in Kogi State on suspicion of cybercrime after making remarks regarding a road project on a community WhatsApp group.

Police in Kogi State have detained a lecturer at the University of Ilorin for reportedly making remarks regarding a road project in his hometown in a WhatsApp group.

Jerry Omodara, the Kogi State government’s security adviser, petitioned for Olorunsuwa who was picked up at his Ilorin home without an arrest order and driven to Kogi State.

The disagreement began when the lecturer stated on a local WhatsApp group that the World Bank, not the state government funded a road project in their community.

Omodara characterized the allegations as vicious, untrue, and intended to undermine the government.

Olorunsuwa insisted that he had previously removed the remarks after community elders intervened, while he claimed that the lecturer was detained for refusing to publish an official retraction.
