Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that his party will no longer serve as a “special purpose vehicle” (SPV) for politicians looking to further their personal interests.

This move aims to restore the party’s integrity and ensure that only committed and credible members contest on its platform.

Obi emphasized the need for a transparent and merit-based process for candidate selection across all tiers, from House of Assembly to the presidency.

The party will prioritize aligning its elected officials with its ideological vision, ensuring that senators and other officials share the party’s values.

Anyone seeking to contest under the Labour Party must be a committed member, not just someone passing through. The party plans to rebuild from the grassroots to the national level, promoting fairness and justice in its internal processes.

Obi’s remarks come after some members, including former Director-General of the Obi-Datti Campaign, Doyin Okupe, admitted to using the Labour Party as an SPV for personal gain. Okupe cited ideological differences as the reason for his departure from the party.
